On the Diierence between Abduction and Induction: a Model Theoretic Perspective

چکیده
In this paper, we show how an appropriate possible world semantics exhibits the fundamental diierences between various forms of logical reasoning such as deduction, abduction and induction. The ensuing model theoretic formal-isation provides a solid foundation for exact further discourse on the issue, such as deciding whether a particular instance of reasoning should be classiied as abduction or rather as induction.

Abduction and Induction: Syllogistic and Inferential Perspectives
Abduction and induction are reasoning forms for drawing conclusions from incomplete information. Induction, i.e. inferring properties of sets of individuals from properties of individuals, was already distinguished by Aristotle, while the term ‘abduction’ was introduced much later by Peirce for inference of explanations for observed phenomena. Both reasoning forms are presently being studied an...
متن کاملThe Effect of Grammar vs. Vocabulary Pre-teaching on EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension: A Schema-Theoretic View of Reading
This study was designed to investigate the effect of grammar and vocabulary pre-teaching, as two types of pre-reading activities, on the Iranian EFL learners’ reading comprehension from a schema–theoretic perspective. The sample consisted of 90 female students studying at pre-university centers of Isfahan. The subjects were randomly divided into three equal-in-number groups. They participated ...
متن کاملAbduction and induction from a non-monotonic reasoning perspective
In this chapter, induction and abduction are investigated in a non-monotonic reasoning framework. We recall that several meanings can be given to logic-based abduction and induction. In particular, we distinguish explanatory and descriptive induction. Explanatory induction is closely related to abduction. Descriptive induction is related to abduction in a less straightforward way. While both ca...
متن کاملOn the Relation between Abduction and Inductive Learning
This Handbook volume is devoted to abduction and learning as they appear in various subfields of artificial intelligence. Broadly speaking, abduction aims at finding explanations for, or causes of, observed phenomena or facts. Learning occurs when an agent adapts its state or behaviour on the basis of experience. Both processes have a number of common characteristics. They both aim at improving...
متن کاملA Perfect Specialization Model for Gravity Equation in Bilateral Trade based on Production Structure
Although initially originated as a totally empirical relationship to explain the volume of trade between two partners, gravity equation has been the focus of several theoretic models that try to explain it. Specialization models are of great importance in providing a solid theoretic ground for gravity equation in bilateral trade. Some research papers try to improve specialization models by addi...
